Gaslighting is an older term that’s gained recent popularity. As a fan of classic film, I’ve been aware of the term for the last couple of decades, but it’s certainly been around at least as long as the two film versions about the behavior.

I have a problem with how narcissism has been popularized, since it’s used to describe any former or potential partner we don’t like. Recognizing abusive and manipulative behavior doesn’t require a psychological term.

As for other terms like codependency, I don’t think a degree is required to dissect this one since Melody Beatty wrote her best selling and influential book about it. Understanding codependency can be done at a self-help level and could help people recognize harmful personal behaviors.

I agree we should keep things simple, but sometimes the perfect words evolve and become popular because they perfectly describe an emotional experience. Like ghosting. I’m not a fan of armchair diagnosis, but I’m happy that a broader understanding of mental health has infiltrated pop culture to raise awareness.
