I think we can harness the power of language with different words without toning down our message. Although I will say that from a fiction perspective, characters demand their own identity — writers don’t necessarily “create” them. Some characters use frequent expletives, just like some people do. To tone that down would make the character inauthentic. I think that can be true here on the non-authentic end, depending. But sometimes, we can get lazy with our words and repetitive. I don’t think that’s toning down; I think that’s just strengthening our work by making it better. Thanks for your insightful comment, and for reading.
