That would work for only one year. After that, I would hope the lesson was learned. Unfortunately, I had an ex who did most of his shopping last-minute at convenience stores and drug stores, and it was hurtful every time. He never thought about what I'd like or planned in advance. I do think it would work as a one-time thing, but over time, it could really hurt a relationship (I know that you didn't mean do that every year, but I'm pointing out some men do).
